The naming of a world’s-first kite

September 04, 2018

Over the last year and a half, we have asked children at different events we’ve held or participated in around Anglesey to come up with a name for our first Deep Green marine energy kite at utility scale – the DG500 device.

We have had a lot of great suggestions such as Sea Glider, Green Charger, Tidal 8, Poseidon and Electra. After a much-heated debate, we finally settled on the winning name “Barcud Gwyrdd” (Welsh for “Green Kite”).

The winners of this "naming competition", siblings Iwan and Elsie from Anglesey, was announced at Minesto’s Unveiling Ceremony held in Holyhead on Thursday. Accompanied by mum and dad, they were presented with a DG500 model kite and a rib ride for the family around Holy Island as a token of gratitude for their contribution.

We want to thank Iwan, Elsie and all the other children that have suggested such great names – there will be more Minesto kites to name in the future!
